Acupuncture for Stress Reduction as Part of Your Fertility Formula
By Sabrina Uy, L.Ac.
Stress is an inevitable part of life. The ebb and flow of the infertility process can cause many people to feel stress beyond what they would normally experience. From the moment you get your diagnosis to the moment you conceive your body and mind are challenged by many of the struggles that add up over time.
The combination of environmental, physical and emotional factors that may comprise your diagnosis and the ways in which you seek treatment for that diagnosis are what I like to call your “fertility formula.” There are many ways to improve your fertility formula by making sure you have a good self-care regimen, getting a massage, meditating and, of course, having acupuncture sessions while you pursue conventional fertility treatments.
If we look at stress relief and acupuncture in particular, we find that Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) holds that the Liver Qi is easily obstructed by stress. In TCM, Liver Stagnation is believed to manifest in various ways including causing PMS symptoms and potentially disrupting the smooth passage of the egg and sperm through the fallopian tube. While science may not necessarily support such claims, we can safely assume that stress relief may indeed be a positive side effect of acupuncture treatments and that the resulting relaxation can help your body rest and clear your mind so that you can focus on your goal.
Each each person has a different fertility formula and will require a treatment which is catered to their needs. During an acupuncture session your practitioner will assess which points may be most useful for your individual situation. I encourage all of my patients to explore their holistic health care options and find out what modality fits the best in their formula. Regular acupuncture treatment, along with conventional fertility treatments and good self-care, is another tool that may help you combat stress in addition to finding the right equation to help you succeed in your journey to conception.
