Teen Stress and Anxiety

As our children grow into their teenage years, their stressors can be heightened. Fortunately, teens have energetically receptive young minds and bodies which makes holistic treatments on these individuals some of the most successful and long lasting. As they say, "Rome wasn't built in a day," and that's our philosophy with teens and natural medicine. It is a process that requires time, patience, and commitment. Some kids notice results right away while others take a bit longer. Most commonly, we see the maximum results after 10-12 weeks of consistent, weekly treatment.

Usually, we like to start kids off with one of our therapeutic, five-body massages. This is a feel-good way for them to experience some of the magic of holistic treatment. We then like to incorporate some form of yoga, whether it is one-on-one sessions, or in a supportive group format. This iis where they begin to learn coping and stress management tools. Our group teen class is a six-week yoga program. It is a journey through the body, mind and spirit that gets them thinking about who they are, how they fit in the world and how their attitudes affect their daily lives. Yoga postures, breathing exercises and meditation are a core part of the curriculum. Since we find teens are extremely curious about finding ways for self-empowerment in non-traditional ways, we utilize these creative outlets as well.

As we progress in our journey toward health, a teen's treatment plan might also include nutrition consultations since their relationship with food and their own body image are important aspects of their self-image. We teach our teen's the importance of nutrition so they understand that food affects the mood and the proper nutrition can give them great ability to manage daily stressors. We also find that teens are beginning to test boundaries and experiment by trying alcohol, drugs or consuming large amounts of caffeine to "feel good." These things are addressed in both our yoga classes and our one-on-one nutritional consultations in a safe and non-judgmental way.

Finally, we work our way up to acupuncture (Traditional Chinese Medicine, TCM) with our teens because we believe it is one of the most helpful holistic modalities in managing stress. Most teens "freak out" at the idea of having needles inserted in their bodies. That's why we start off with acupressure, chinese body massage, electro-stimulation and/or touching and seeing what the needles look like. It's a gradual process that is actually painless and extremely relaxing. We'll know when your teen is ready for full needle treatment, but they'll never be pushed into something they don't feel 100% comfortable in doing.
