Acupuncture at Pulling Down the Moon

"This traditional practice is becoming a part of the portfolio of tools that providers can use to care for patients."

~ Dr. Josephine Briggs,

Director National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)

Acupuncture Acupuncture is just one facet within a broader system of ancient healing called Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Acupuncture uses one-time, sterile needles that are the size of a strand of hair to stimulate certain points on the body. This technique is believed to open certain energy channels or meridians that exist within our bodies. Think of these meridians as a super highway of energy that gets congested with traffic, poor road conditions and even blocks where passage is impossible. Acupuncture, in very simple terms, is believed to clear these blockages to varying degree in order to allow energy, greater health and the feeling of emotional well-being flow freely within the body.

Does it hurt? No it doesn't! The majority of patients feel little sensation beyond a slight pinch in certain areas. Not to worry, though, if you feel more than a quick pinch, our acupuncturists are trained to make your experience painless, relaxing and stress free. In fact, many people end up falling asleep during the course of their acupuncture treatment. How's that for an added bonus!

In some cases (not for our fertility patients. Sorry ladies), your acupuncturist might also suggest a customized herbal formula. We use a pharmacy that ensures herbs are high grade, contaminate-free and high potency. Herbs often make your acupuncture needle treatment last longer and the two together can be very effective.

We are big believers in this medicine and have seen some pretty amazing results. While we don't promise "magic" we can say that you will probably leave feeling less stressed, more in control of your health and glad you did it (at the very least). In fact, we pretty much guarantee it! You are sent a survey after your treatment and the owners of Pulling Down the Moon read your comments. If you are not 100% pleased with certain aspects of your treatment, they'll make sure your issue is addressed or fixed. They'll even move you to an acupuncturist more suited to your personality if you just didn't "click" the first time around.

Kids and teens respond extremely well to acupuncture. Don't worry, it's not as scary as it sounds. We've treated lots of kids by starting slow with acupressure and gentle touch and then move into needle insertion later in the treatment plan once they're ready.

For those of you scientists out there who think this all sounds a bit woo-woo, here are some interesting stats:

According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) studies have examined the local effects of traditional acupuncture using brain imaging techniques to show, for example, that acupuncture affects the part of our brain related to the "suffering components" of pain. Neurochemical studies are revealing the effects of acupuncture on neurotransmitters associated with pain, depression, anxiety and stress. Clinical studies also suggest a benefit for allergies, asthma, digestive issues and women's health/infertility (learn more about acupuncture for fertility here).
