What Happens During an Acupuncture Session at Pulling Down the Moon?
We begin each acupuncture visit with a thorough assessment of your health history, current concerns, and long-term goals. Your acupuncturist will then insert thin, hair-like needles into meridians or points that correspond to the area or organs of interest. While some points for fertility are located on the abdomen, your acupuncturist may also insert needles on your head/face, arms, hands, chest, legs, and/or feet to address other issues (like anxiety, insomnia, GERD, etc.). We do this according to the "whole system" approach favored by Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Once needles are inserted, you may feel a tingling or pulsing sensation. That's normal as energy (or "Qi") begins to flow more freely and your nervous system relaxes. If at any time you feel uncomfortable, your acupuncturist will work with you to find a more agreeable point. You'll then lie in place for 40-50 minutes as balance is restored to your entire body.
Please allow 90 minutes for your comprehensive initial visit. Follow-up visits are 60 minutes each.
The Benefits of Our Group Practice Model
Whether you're on the path to pregnancy or embarking on a journey to restored health, our team of licensed practitioners is here to provide comprehensive, coordinated support. Our group practice model ensures that no matter which practitioner you see, you'll receive continuity of care from one visit to the next. Still, you might wonder:
- Why should I consider seeing a practitioner of the opposite sex? A fresh perspective can go a long way. Check out our video to learn more.
- What if I only want to see my practitioner? Our team will help you book accordingly and offer appointment suggestions if your cycle timing doesn't align with their availability.
- What if I only want to see a practitioner who is the same sex as me?
We honor your preferences and will inform you of any unavoidable scheduling conflicts that may arise. We'll never reschedule you with another practitioner without your consent.

Risks of Acupuncture for Fertility
Acupuncture is known for its very low risk of side effects. All Pulling Down the Moon acupuncturists are licensed by the State of Illinois and are certified by the National Certification Commission of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine and have extensive training in safe application of acupuncture and associated techniques. For this reason, they are able to make safe and effective choices for your care at any stage of the fertility and pregnancy journey.
Acupuncture, a time-honored practice, offers numerous benefits with very few side effects. Acupuncturists use single-use, pre-sterilized needles that they properly dispose of after each patient. Most clients don’t feel any discomfort from the needles, though there can be a temporary feeling of pain or tingling during insertion. Once the needles are placed, there may be a sensation of heaviness or tingling that comes and goes, but most often clients don’t feel anything at all at the sites during the session. Acupuncture is also safe during all stages of pregnancy, and many women find that it helps with some of their pregnancy symptoms, such as joint pain, nausea, fatigue or morning sickness.
