What is Red Light Therapy?

Did you know that Pulling Down the Moon now offers Red Light Therapy treatments? You’ve probably heard about Red Light Therapy all over the place - for skin health, anti-aging, etc. But what is Red Light Therapy and what does it actually do?

Red Light Therapy has been known by many names - low level light therapy (LLLT), photobiomodulation, and others. It involves the use of low-temperature lights applied to an area of the body to help restore healthy function. Studies have shown that light-based energy can stimulate cells for higher function, healing, and tissue repair. The spectrum of light (photons) that is most effective for relieving pain and stimulating ATP in cells to help with maturation, repair, and function is red in color, hence why it’s called “Red” Light Therapy.

Contrary to popular belief, it is NOT the same as laser treatments. Laser treatment uses tools to perform controlled micro-damage to the body to help invoke tissue healing. Conversely, Red Light Therapy is completely non-invasive and does not cause a wound or tissue damage of any kind.  Similar to photosynthesis in plants, human tissue can absorb light energy to be used for maintenance and repair much as plants use energy from the sun for survival and growth. Red Light Therapy is non-invasive and carries little to no risk of side effects.

Red Light Therapy utilizes LEDs (light emitting diodes, tiny computer chips encased in glass), which emit light-based energy that is absorbed by the body for therapeutic purposes such as skin rejuvenation, reduced inflammation, increased circulation & lymphatic activity, reduced pain & stiffness, faster recovery, and cell repair. Different wavelengths of light (colors) can have different effects at different depths of penetration. LEDs are non-invasive, soothing, & relaxing. It does not use UV.

How can Red Light Therapy / LLLT help support fertility?

Research studies utilizing Red Light Therapy from Denmark* & Japan** show a statistically significant increase (66% and 21% respectively) in the ability to conceive for women who struggled with infertility. For women, we recommend (6) 30-minute treatments over the course of 2 weeks beginning with day 1 of your menstrual cycle. This can be used with both natural and ART cycles and can be repeated for future cycles, if necessary.

Red Light Therapy has been shown to help with improving circulation, reducing inflammation, and repair of aging cells, and softening scar tissue. This could potentially help with PCOS, endometriosis, and aging.

Pulling Down the Moon uses the Lightstim® belt over the abdomen, which provides a comforting, warm (not hot) sensation during your session. It can be used as a stand-alone treatment or in conjunction with your acupuncture visit. It can also be used before/after Mercier Therapy and Therapeutic Massage.
