Electro-Acupuncture: Great News for Egg Quality Issues!

Learn more about new research that may help you conceive!

Poor egg quality is a common diagnosis in women seeking out medical fertility treatments like IVF and it can also be one of the most frustrating.  At Pulling Down the Moon, we treat our clients’ poor egg quality with a variety of methods:  nutrition supplementation that has been shown to improve egg quality, blood building massage sessions that support an optimal uterine environment and, of course, Traditional Chinese Medicine treatments including acupuncture, electrostimulation, moxa and herbal therapy.

In a study performed in 2019 by a team of researchers in Indonesia, electro-stimulation acupuncture (EA) (small alligator clips connecting a TENS-like unit to acupuncture needles, which provides a small, pleasant vibration during the treatment) was used to during IVF stimulation cycles in 24 women. In contrast to many other studies which have focused exclusively on acupuncture when used around IVF transfer, this study examines the effects of EA on the stimulation cycle and shows a 25% increase in rates of conception and markers for egg quality even when AMH levels were between 1.13 - 1.73 ng/mL. While this is a relatively small study, it shows the
dramatic impact that acupuncture can have on every stage of the fertility journey.
